Over Mother’s Day weekend we headed up to Placerville KOA with the two boys and baby girl for a weekend camping trip. A six-hour drive to our destination. We purchased some fishing rods a few weeks prior which had the boys intrigued. We explained how to fish and built up their excitement over the next week before we left for our camping trip. Almost 3 year old Fox was super excited as he is comprehending much more than his younger brother. We even purchased some fishing bath toys which they thoroughly enjoyed and practiced with leading up to our trip.

We purchased this Portable Mini Fishing Rod and Reel Combo Kids Fishing Pole with Fishing line Hooks Lures Floats Weights and it was perfect. It included everything we needed. Easy to handle and easy to use. I was a bit nervous about the actual hooks, but once the marshmallow bait was attached to the hook it was pretty safe.

The lake at the Placerville KOA is man made. The set up perfect, especially for kids. You enter over a bridge onto the island which is completely fenced in. You can even see our cabin straight across from the bridge. We purchased our bait and fishing license at the main office. They have everything you need in their shop, from batteries, fishing tools, ice through to the all important milk.

On Saturday we ventured over to the island to get some fishing in. To our amazement when Fox was reeling his line in, he actually caught a fish. His very first fish. A catfish. How very exciting and amazing for our little boy. The catfish he caught did, however, have to be thrown back into the water as this lake is for Trout fishing. And secretly I’m happy about that as I wasn’t prepared for actually taking back any fish we caught.

All in all, it was a very successful first fishing experience for our boys and I can’t recommend the set up for children enough. After they were sick of fishing there was playing to be done on the play equipment, and stones on the ground that needed throwing. My boys enjoyed being outdoors and playing in the dirt the entire weekend.

Now to book our next trip. But, maybe a little closer to home next time.

This is the second fishing rod we purchased. Both were great and perfect for our toddlers.
