Fresh olive oil- is simply that- it’s the juice of freshly harvested, freshly milled olives.  All the many delicious varieties of olive oil deliver different tastes and a range of healthy nutrients for us, as well as our furry friends.  Some benefits of adding fresh EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) to your diet include reduced risks of:

  1. Cancer,
  2. Heart Disease,
  3. Oxidative Stress,
  4. Diabetes,
  5. Obesity,
  6. Rheumatoid Arthritis,
  7. Osteoporosis, and
  8. High Blood Pressure.

Becoming intimately familiar with a particular EVOO’s flavor characteristics and chemistry i.e. the crush date, the antioxidant content, the oleic acid, and FFA will all help you make an educated decision about which olive oil is right for you. Sound complicated? Then contact Selena to discuss all of the characteristics and why certain ones will be more suitable for you. Of course, you don’t actually have to visit the store, give her a call or visit the online store.

8 Health Benefits of Olive Oil

Extra virgin olive oil decreases in flavor and health benefits over time, so you want to make sure you always obtain the freshest oil possible. Old, poorly made and improperly stored extra virgin olive oil yields fewer, if any, health benefits and undesirable flavor.  Knowing more about the science and flavorful taste of fresh olive oil is fun, adds to your evening meals, and turns an ordinary dinner into a gourmet experience!

Olive Alchemy, an olive oil specialty based in Calabasas, California (and is local to me). But don’t let that stop you using them and shopping with them as they provide shipping throughout the US. Their olive oils are globally-sourced and seasonally changing, so they always have the freshest produce that it is readily available for tasting!  And what’s olive oil, without the balsamic?  Their 18-year aged Balsamic Vinegar Condimentos are all from Modena, Italy.  Cooked in copper-kettles and aged in wood barrels, they are naturally caramelized without artificial coloring, thickeners, or sweeteners.

For those who are a little less traditional, add a great “argumento” fused or infused olive oil or vinegar to your meal. Even tossing a plain pasta in our Tuscan Herb olive oil or baking a simple chicken breast in our Coconut White Balsamic adds tons of flavor that even the pickiest of eaters will enjoy!

Olive Alchemy carries over 40 olive oils and balsamic vinegars, along with other gourmet foods, unique tableware, and certified organic EVOO based body care.  They are a local, mother-and-daughter owned and operated small business. And who doesn’t like supporting our local small businesses, especially ones focused on quality products and health?  Click to visit the Olive Alchemy website to find out more or to get in contact with Selena.

Cheesy Garlic Hasselback Potatoes Recipe

Cheesy Garlic Hasselback Potatoes

Serves 4

Comfort food at its finest

  • 8 medium red new potatoes
  • 1/2 cup Olive Alchemy Garlic olive oil (you could also substitute with any EVOO, herb or chili infused oil)
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • fresh ground pepper to taste
  • 1 cup grated melting cheese of your choice (preferably cheddar cheese)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chopped chives for garnish

Preheat the oven to 400 F.

Place each potato on a large spoon and cut thin slices along the length of the potato, the spoon is used as a guide so as not to cut all the way through.

Pour your olive oil into a large bowl or container.  Toss the potatoes with the olive oil. Make sure to get the oil in-between the potato slices.  Arrange your potatoes cut-side up on a foil lined baking sheet.  Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste, making sure to season in between the slices.

Bake for 30 minutes until the edges begin to turn golden brown.  Remove the potatoes, sprinkle with cheese, and bake for another 15-20 minutes until tender and golden brown.

Add seasoning to taste, sprinkle with chives for garnish, and serve with sour cream if desired.
